I read this article over at the NYT while I was sitting in a waiting room this afternoon getting some work done on my vehicle, and I thought it was interesting enough to share. And it also got me thinking back to a friendship I ended about a year and a half ago, and reflecting on my reasoning and feelings back then.

The article does a nice job of summarizing reasons friendships end, but in my opinion it left out something even more fundamental - trust. Interests can diverge, geography can divide, people change and grow apart over time, but ultimately do you have anyone you consider to be a close friend who you do not trust? I don't.

Friendship is a form of intimacy. That comes in many degrees, but ultimately I don't think it is possible to be more than an acquaintance with someone who you do not trust. And in the case of my former friend, my belief at the time, right or wrong, that she was not honoring her marriage vows, destroyed my sense of trust in her.

Perhaps I'm being childishly naive, but I believe that when someone can't be trusted with respect to the most significant adult relationship one has in life, they can't be trusted with smaller things either. And as I mentioned earlier, once trust is gone friendship ends as well.

Anyway, we all learn to make friends in life. And yet at the same time, a thoughtful piece on how to end friendships is something I've rarely seen.
