One of the toilets broke the other day. Tank bolts rusted through, because they were iron. Stupid. So the toilets are non-standard, and I can't find replacement parts at Lowe's or Home Despot, or even online, because the mfg ate shit during the financial crisis, etc. I can just find brass "Universal fit" stuff that ain't right, so I run with that.
Doesn't fit, doesn't seal. WTF to do? Hrm.. Aquarium sealer! $10 at PetSmart. Fucking magic!
Given one of the Universal brass fitting kits, and a toilet tank it doesn't seal:
1) After removing the old hardware, scrub, scrub, scrub. The bottom of the tank has to be as clean as you can get it.
2) Let it dry, or the aquarium seal isn't going to adhere
3) Seal
4) After maybe 30 minutes, go in and pat it into the porcelain
5) 48 hour curing time to let the silicon set
6) Crap in peace, because the combination of brass hardware and silicon seals mean that tank is better than what you had when you bought the house
